Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (58-45) were blanked by the Omaha Storm Chasers (59-45) at Dell Diamond Tuesday night, 2-0. The E-Train only mustered one hit over the first five innings of play and finished the series opener with a total of five.

Express starter Alec Asher looked to avoid the first inning woes that plagued the Triple-A rookie in his last start at Dell Diamond, an outing that went only 0.2 inning with five earned runs to his name, by continuing the momentum from a win in Iowa five days ago. However, Asher found trouble as Omaha lead-off hitter CF Rey Fuentes lofted a softly hit single into right field for the first hit of the game. Fuentes went on to steal second, but a pop out by SS Christian Colon gave Asher the first out. Asher used a fly out to freeze Fuentes on second with Storm Chasers 1B Jose Martinez coming to the plate. Martinez lined a double into right field that scored Fuentes from second to put Omaha up 1-0. Round Rock C Brett Nicholas bailed the E-Train out of the inning by catching Martinez trying to steal third.

Omaha starter Miguel Almonte kept the Express quiet through the first four innings and only conceded one hit. The righty earned some run support in the top of the fifth as Omaha LF Brett Eibner doubled into left to start the inning. A pop out and strikeout helped Asher's cause, but a walk and a wild pitch moved Eibner to third, putting runners on the corners. A ground-rule double from C Micah Gibbs brought Eibner across the plate for the 2-0 Storm Chasers lead. Asher fashioned a line out to halt the surge.

Almonte (2-0, 1.80) completed his night with a 1-2-3 fifth to finish with 5.0 innings pitched, one hit, four walks and six strikeouts. Asher (3-6, 4.73) lasted an inning longer with 6.0 under his belt while allowing six hits, two runs (two earned), one walk and tossing four Ks.

The Storm Chasers bullpen kept the shutout alive by holding the Express to four hits over the final four innings. Round Rock brought the crowd to life in the bottom of the ninth with a single by Nicholas and a double from SS Beamer Weems with two outs. CF Antoan Richardson was unable to be the hero as Omaha closer Scott Alexander sent him down swinging for his 12th save of the year.

The Express and Storm Chasers continue the series tomorrow night as RHP Jerad Eickhoff (8-4, 4.47) takes the mound for the E-Train against Omaha southpaw Buddy Baumann (1-2, 2.58). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
