Kernels Beat LumberKings 4-3 in 10 Innings

CLINTON, Iowa - Despite being outhit, 8-6, on the night, Cedar Rapids defeated the Clinton LumberKings, 4-3, in 10 innings. Zack Larson delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the 10th.

Tanner English was hit in the back to start the inning. English later advanced to second on a Thyago Vieria wild pitch. Two batters later, Edgar Corcino drew a walk, giving the Kernels runners on first and second with one out. Larson followed Corcino with an RBI double to left-center, plating English for the go-ahead run.

Randy LeBlanc (7-3) earned the win. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one in two innings out of the bullpen.

Cam Booser (10) recorded the save. The southpaw yielded one walk and struck out a pair in a scoreless bottom of the 10th.

Michael Theofanopoulos yielded one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Keaton Steele recorded a no-decision in the start. The right-hander yielded three hits and three walks while striking out one in 4 2/3 innings.

Vieira (1-2) suffered the loss. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three in 1 2/3 innings.

Cedar Rapids (19-13, 60-42) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third. Brian Navarreto drew a walk to begin the frame. Navarreto then advanced to second on a Schiraldi wild pitch. Navarreto moved into third on a passed ball. Two batters later, English drew a walk, giving the Kernels runners on the corners. English then swiped second base, his 30th stolen base. Nick Gordon got the Kernels on the board with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Navarreto.

The Kernels extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Rafael Valera started the inning with a one-out single. Two batters later, Navarreto brought in Valera with a two-out RBI double down the left field line. Pat Kelly followed Navarreto with a RBI single to center.

Clinton (6-26, 32-69) cut the Cedar Rapids lead to two with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Gianfranco Wawoe drew a one-out walk before Austin Cousino singled through the left side, giving the LumberKings runners on first and second. Arby Field followed Cousino with a bunt single up the third base line, loading the bases for Clinton. Pat Leyland cut the Kernels lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Wawoe from third.

The LumberKings evened the game at 3-3 with two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Joe DeCarlo reached on a one-out walk before moving into second on a LeBlanc wild pitch. Two batters later, Kristian Brito drew a walk, however, another LeBlanc wild pitch advanced DeCarlo to third. Martin Peguero then replaced Brito as a pinch-runner Wawoe nodded the contest with a two-out, two-run double into right-center, scoring both DeCarlo and Peguero.

Valera led the Kernels with two hits on the evening. Valera went 2-for-5 with a run and also extended his personal-best hitting streak to five games. Larson extended his personal-best hitting streak to seven games with an RBI double in the top of the 10th.

English extended his on-base streak to 10 games with a walk in the top of the first while Kelly extended his personal-best hitting and on-base streaks to four and seven games, respectively.

The Kernels continue the three-game series tomorrow evening v. the Clinton LumberKIngs. First pitch in the middle game of the series is at 6:30 p.m. from Ashford University Field. RHP Felix Jorge (5-3, 42.10) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Zack Littell (2-6, 3.88) counters for Clinton.
