Cyclones Lose a Heartbreaker, 4-3 in Extras

FISHKILL, NY (July 28, 2015) - The Cyclones losing skid continued on Tuesday night as they fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 4-3 in extra innings. Brooklyn went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position on the night, including three strikeouts with the go-ahead run on second base in the top of the 8th. The game-winning run scored in the bottom of the 10th inning when the home plate umpire ruled that Brandon Brosher had illegally blocked the plate on what would have been the final out of the inning.

Chris Flexen made the start for Brooklyn as he continues to recover from Tommy John Surgery that kept him out since last July. The righthander cruised through the first inning unscathed before running into trouble in the bottom of the second. Matt Dacey worked a leadoff walk to start the rally and came around to score when Angel Moreno lined a double into left centerfield. Oswald Caraballo was able to cut the ball off, and it appeared as though the Renegades would have runners on the corners, but the Cyclones leftfielder stumbled and fell to the ground allowing both runners to advance and giving Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead. Nic Wilson then followed with a ground-rule double that plated Moreno to push the lead to 2-0. Flexen was able to bear down and strike out the next two batters to limit the damage.

After a scoreless third, Brooklyn sliced the Renegades lead in half in the top of the fourth. Vinny Siena doubled to start the frame and advanced to third on a ground out from Michael Bernal. With David Thompson batting, Hudson Valley starter Michael Velasquez dropped a return throw to the mound following a 1-0 pitch, and as the ball trickled towards second base, Siena came charging home with Brooklyn first run.

Hudson Valley pushed their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Flexen started to run out of gas in only his second rehab appearance with the Cyclones. Jake Croneworth stroked a one-out single to left field to start the threat before hitting Michael Russell with a pitch and allowing another single from Joe McCarthy to load the bases. That would be the end of the road for Flexen who gave way to Craig Missigman. The righthander was able to limit the damage, recording out number two on a sac fly from Cade Gotta before striking out Matt Dacey to end the frame with Hudson Valley ahead 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Brooklyn continued the see-saw scoring after Branden Kaupe and Siena had a pair of singles to put two runners aboard for Michael Bernal with one out. The Cyclone rightfielder ripped a hot shot down the left field line that was too hot to handle for Matt Dacey, allowing Kaupe to score and slice the deficit to 3-2.

After matching zeroes in the seventh the Cyclones drew even in the top of the eighth. Kaupe walked to start the threat before Tucker Tharp singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Vinny Siena, who went 3-for-5 on the night, took advantage of the scoring chance with an infield single that plated Kaupe an knotted the score at 3-3. The Cyclones looked poised to take their first lead of the game with a pair of runners aboard and nobody out, but Bernal and Thompson each struck out swinging. Jeff Diehl was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, Brandon Brosher also struck out to end the inning with the score still tied.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the 10th when Hudson Valley would walkoff with a win. Carlos Valdez (1-2) struggled with control and gave the Renegades the win without allowing a hit. The Brooklyn southpaw hit Croneworth with a pitch to start the frame before a Michael Russell sac bunt moved him into scoring position. Valdez than walked Joe McCarthy on four pitches before uncorking a wild pitch that moved the pair of runners into scoring position, with only one out. Cade Gotta was then intentionally walked to load the bases before Matt Dacey sent a fly ball to shallow right field that was caught by Michael Bernal and gunned to the plate on a fly. Brandon Brosher appeared to slap the tag down on Croneworth at the plate for the final out of the inning, but home plate umpire Greg Roemer ruled that Brosher had illegally blocked the plate, which gave the Renegades a 4-3 win. Cyclones manager Tom Gamboa quickly charged out of the dugout to vigorously argue the call, but to no avail.

With the loss, the Cyclones fall into a four-way tie for first place in the McNamara Division standings as Aberdeen, Brooklyn, Hudson Valley and Staten Island are each 19-17 as we approach the halfway mark of the season. The Cyclones will look to rebound on Wednesday night at MCU Park when LHP Kevin Canelon (2-2, 4.33) takes the mound for Brooklyn.
