Philadelphia Freedoms News Release

The Philadelphia Freedoms were defeated by the Boston Lobsters in the team's last home match of the regular season at the Villanova University Pavilion on Tuesday night.

Returning to the team was Wimbledon Quarterfinalist Coco Vandeweghe as the Freedoms played for a chance to make the league's playoffs.

The match started with men's singles pairing Robby Ginepri against Christian Harrison. In a 5-0 set, Freedoms shut out the Lobsters and stole the lead early in the match.

In the second set of the match, Taylor Towsend and Coco Vandeweghe took the court to face-off with Irina Falconi and Arantxa Parra Santonja during women's doubles.

The Freedoms pair tried their best, but fell short giving the Lobsters the set win at a score of 5-2.

Next up was men's doubles where Robby Ginepri and Marcelo Melo took on Scott Lipsky and Christian Harrison.

The set was a tough one, pushing into a tiebreaker where the Lobsters pulled ahead, taking the set 5-4.

As the match continued with women's singles, the Freedoms' Vandeweghe and the Lobsters' Falconi battled to see who could take the lead. Vandeweghe was down three games to one in the set when Townsend was substituted in during the fifth game of the set. Unfortunately, Townsend wasn't able to steal back the win and the Freedoms lost the set 5-1.

Entering the final set of mixed doubles, the Freedoms sent out Marcelo Melo and Taylor Townsend to take on Scott Lipsky and Arantxa Parra Santonja. This match would be the deciding factor in whether or not the Freedoms would clinch a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

The Freedoms fought hard and won the set 5-3 putting the match score at 18-17 with the Lobsters in the lead, forcing the game into extended play.

Melo and Townsend gave it their all, but the Lobsters took the match in extended time coming out on top with a final score of 19-17.

The season is not over just yet for the Freedoms as they have a chance to make the playoffs if the Washington Kastles beat the Boston Lobsters on Wednesday.
