Yonny Chirinos Pitches BG to Series-Opening 2-0 Victory

Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - Yonny Chirinos tossed a career-high 7.0 innings and earned his third victory in four starts for the Hot Rods, as Bowling Green opened a three-game series with a 2-0 victory over West Michigan in front of 1,920 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday evening.

Bowling Green (17-15, 54-48) wins its ninth home game over the last 10 played and ties Peoria for the league-high in shutouts this season with 11. West Michigan (18-13, 51-49) drops its third straight to the Hot Rods and its fifth contest over the last seven played.

Chirinos (3-1) kept the Whitecaps at bay all night, scattering just four hits over his 7.0 frames and did not allow a West Michigan runner past first base. The Venezuelan right-hander struck out five Whitecaps while issuing no walks for the second time as a Hot Rod.

In four starts with Bowling Green, Chirinos has allowed just two earned runs in 24.0 innings for a 0.75 ERA since being called up from Hudson Valley.

It took three innings for a run to score, but it was Bowling Green that drew first blood. Against Whitecaps' starter Ross Seaton, Mac James and Alec Sole hit consecutive singles to open the bottom of the third, and Thomas Milone struck a one-out double into right field to score James and give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.

Seaton (9-5) pitched into the seventh, but left after 6.1 innings following a single by Justin Williams, a fielder's choice by Hunter Lockwood and a single by Nick Ciuffo. Seaton was pulled for Dominic Moreno, who moved Lockwood and Ciuffo up a base on a wild pitch and surrendered a James sacrifice fly to right field to score Lockwood, putting Bowling Green up 2-0.

Over his 6.1 innings of work, Seaton was touched four seven hits and both Hot Rods' runs while striking out three and walking none.

Kyle Bird worked 2.0 perfect innings in the eighth and ninth in relief of Chirinos and induced a Christin Stewart flyout to Lockwood in left field to clinch the victory - and his ninth save of the season. Bird and Chirinos combined to retire all nine West Michigan leadoff hitters and did not let a Whitecap runner in scoring position all evening.

Williams and Sole recorded multi-hit games for Bowling Green, but Grant Kay saw a five-game hitting streak come to an end with a 0-for-4 night against Whitecaps pitching.

Bowling Green looks to win the series outright on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT, when Hyrum Formo (4-4, 4.78) opposes Whitecaps' righty Artie Lewicki (1-3, 4.25).
