Zephyrs Extend Winning Streak to Six Games
July 28, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs piled up 14 hits and rolled to their sixth consecutive victory, 5-2 over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday night.
After dropping seven straight games coming out of the All-Star break, the Z's have won six in a row for the first time since April 2014.
Colorado Springs struck early when Nevin Ashley was hit by an Adam Conley pitch in the second inning and scored as Luis Sardinas doubled past an outstretched Vinny Rottino against the left field fence, giving the Sky Sox a brief 1-0 lead.
The Zephyrs answered to tie in their half of the frame after Jordany Valdespin legged out a drag bunt and weathered a collision with Sky Sox first baseman Jason Rogers. Valdespin advanced to second on an Austin Nola single and scored when Brandon Bantz fisted a single to right.
New Orleans took advantage of a throwing error to grab the lead in the fourth. Juan Diaz led off with a single and scooted to third on a successful hit-and-run by Nola, then raced home when cutoff man Yadiel Rivera wildly threw behind Nola at first base.
Conley escaped trouble in the sixth to preserve the Zephyrs' one-run cushion. After issuing a leadoff walk, Matt Clark laced a one-out single to put the tying run in scoring position, but Conley rebounded to induce a pop out and fanned Ashley to end the inning.
Conley (9-3) gave up just three hits and struck out seven in six innings to become the fifth pitcher in the Pacific Coast League to win nine games this season.
The Z's provided insurance in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles by Kila Ka'aihue and Marcell Ozuna and a run-scoring single by Diaz.
Ozuna went 2-for-4 to boost his batting average to .353 with 12 extra-base hits in 18 contests with New Orleans, while Valdespin collected two hits for the fifth straight game.
Chris Reed retired all three batters he faced in the seventh, and Scott McGough allowed an RBI double to Rivera in the ninth before clinching the Zephyrs' longest winning streak of the year.
The Zephyrs and Sky Sox continue the series on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
