Rox Stun Border Cats with Five Run 9th
July 28, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
Thunder Bay, ON--- Facing the prospect of having blown a 4-0 lead over the Border Cats, the Rox rallied for 5 runs in the 9th inning to complete an improbable comeback in their 10-9 victory over Thunder Bay.
St. Cloud got things going early, as they took a 4-0 lead into the 6th inning. Joe Tietjen (UNC Asheville) launched his 4th home run of the season over the left field fence in the 5th inning, as he turned on a fastball and launched it out of Port Arthur Stadium.
Things got dicey for the Rox in the 7th, when the Border Cats scored 6 runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Border Cats would add 2 more in the 8th, and things looked bleak for St. Cloud entering the 9th, as they trailed 9-5.
Like they've done all season, the Rox refused to quit even in the face of the impossible odds they faced. Connor Crane (Mcneese St.) got the rally started when he singled on the first pitch of the 9th inning. The next 4 batters would all reach safely, which cut the Rox deficit to 9-6.
The stage was set for Liam Bedford (Doane College) to be the hero, and how ever did he deliver. Bedford turned and crushed a 1-0 pitch deep into left, which gave the Rox their first grand slam of the season and quickly turned a 3-run deficit into a 1-run lead.
Trevor Charpie (Saddleback CC) came on for the 9th to earn his 9th save of the season, as the Rox won their 4th straight game and maintained their perfect record against Thunder Bay, as they are now 7-0 against the Border Cats.
Tonight's SC Times player of the game was Liam Bedford. Bedford was 1-4 with 4 RBI's including the game winning RBI in his grand slam. For more Rox coverage, please visit us online at www.sctimes.com
