Bisons Fall to Chiefs 6-5

July 27, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons were in too familiar of a situation on Monday night. One day after completing a seven-run comeback to win a one-run game, Buffalo nearly did the same thing. But this time, Buffalo couldn't finish the comeback.

The Bisons rallied late for a comeback attempt, but fell one run short, losing to Syracuse, 6-5, in the first of a four-game series. The loss snaps the Herd's five-game winning streak, but still remain 2.5 games behind first place in the International League due to a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre loss.

Buffalo entered the bottom of the eighth inning in a tie after working for three straight innings to overcome a large deficit. The Chief's Josh Johnson changed that quickly. In the eighth inning, Johnson broke a tie game with a sacrifice fly make it a 6-5 game. Buffalo's offense went cold as Syracuse struck out the side to end the game and the streak.

Daniel Norris did not have his best stuff on Monday night, but pitched well enough to give the surging Buffalo offense a chance to take over the game. Norris went five innings and gave up four earned runs. He struggled with his command, walking four in the process. He would have suffered his 11th loss of the season, but a red-hot Buffalo offense bailed him out - and nearly won the game.

The Bisons put up five unanswered runs beginning with a three-run sixth inning and put up a run in each of the following innings to tie the game at five apiece. Andy Burns drove in two of those runs and finished as one of four Bisons to record two or more hits in the game.

Alex Hassan led the team with three hits, while Melky Mesa and Dalton Pompey registered two each. Pompey extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Matt Hague had an uncharacteristic night at the plate. The MVP candidate and IL batting leader failed to record a hit and struck out twice in one of his roughest night's at the plate all season. He was the only Bison starter to not record a hit. He also did not reach base in a road game for the first time since May 5. However, he still holds a commanding lead in the IL batting race with his .349 average.

The Herd will continue its series with Syracuse on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Bisons Notes: Joba Chamberlain hurled a perfect 1-2-3 inning in his first outing with the Bisons. The righty was picked up after the Detroit Tigers released him in early July. He struck out two batters in the debut.
