SeaWolves Win Third Straight

The SeaWolves took down the Reading Fightin Phils 4-3 on Monday night at First Energy Stadium, winning their third consecutive game.

Erie opened the scoring in the top of the second against Fightins starter Zach Eflin. With Dominic Ficociello at first and two outs, Alberto Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games, doubling to the right field alley, scoring the runner for a 1-0 lead. Wade Gaynor followed with a single putting runners on the corners for Harold Castro. With Castro batting, Gaynor took off for second and got in a rundown. Before the Fightins could tag out Gaynor, Gonzalez scored for a 2-0 lead.

The 'Wolves added to their lead in the third. Castro and Wynton Bernard each singled, putting two on for Jeff McVaney. A double steal moved the runners both into scoring position. McVaney sent a bouncer back to the mound that hit the bare hand of Eflin and went towards the shortstop J.P. Crawford. Crawford barehanded the ball and threw wide of first. Two runs scored on the play for a 4-0 lead.

Reading got on the board in the sixth against Erie starter Derek Hankins. Angelo Mora led off with a triple and scored a run on a throwing error on the relay from center making it 4-1. With two outs, Cameron Perkins belted a solo home run to left making it 4-2.

Hankins left the game after giving up a solo blast in the seventh to Andrew Knapp making it 4-3.

Matt Crouse and Paul Voelker retired the final nine batters of the game, sending Erie to the win. Voelker finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts, earning his sixth save in as many changes.

Hankins (5-7) has now won three of his past four starts. He allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work.
