Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

HAMPTON, Va. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs allowed inside-the-park home runs in back-to-back innings, and lost to the Peninsula Pilots 9-0 Monday night at Peninsula War Memorial Stadium.

SwampDogs starting pitcher Will Bice (Fr./Kennesaw State) and Pilots starter Zack Burke matched wits and zeroes through the first three innings, but the fourth would be the beginning of the trouble for Bice.

He allowed back-to-back singles to open the frame, then Jimmy Kerrigan was up and hit a line drive into centerfield. Sky Overton (Soph./Furman) tried to make a diving catch but mistimed the attempt and the ball got behind him and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Kerrigan to round the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

In the fifth inning, the Pilots struck again, as Connor Myers smacked a ball to left field that Richard Carter (Jr./Cumberland) drifted back on and collided with the outfield wall. Myers raced around the bases with the second inside-the-park home run of the night as Overton retrieved the ball from left. Carter was removed from the game, but suffered only bruises from the collision.

The Pilots tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh inning to open up a commanding 9-0 lead.

Offensively Jimmy Faul (Jr./Louisville) and CJ Needam (Jr./Mount Olive) each had a pair of hits to lead the charge.

Bice got the loss for the SwampDogs falling to 0-3 on the season, while Zack Burke got the win for the Pilots, improving to 3-2. The loss eliminates the SwampDogs from playoff contention.

The SwampDogs (17-31) have a Tuesday matinee with the Petersburg Generals before returning home on Wednesday to take on the Morehead City Marlins on Bringing Memories Home Safe presented by the Fayetteville Walk to End Alzheimer's.
