Bees Squander Lead in 5-4 Loss

(Burlington-IA)- The Burlington Bees (47-53) lost a two run lead in the eighth inning, losing the series finale, 5-4 to the Quad Cities River Bandits (63-36) Sunday afternoon at Community Field.

Jake Jewell started the game by walking Bobby Boyd and Alex Bregman, putting runners at first and second with no body out. The next batter, Nick Tanielu grounded a single to center, scoring Boyd, giving the River Bandits a 1-0 lead. Jewell was able to get out of the inning, getting Drew Ferguson to fly out and Ramon Laureano to ground into a double play.

Drew Ferguson kicked off the top of the fourth inning with line drive single to left. Ramon Laureano reached on a bunt single, putting runners at second and third with no outs. After Sean McMullen was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, Trent Woodward hit into a double play, scoring Ferguson, upping the River Bandits' lead to 2-0.

Tim Arakawa started the bottom of the sixth, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, grounding a single to left. After Nick Flair flew out to left, Steven Mateo chopped a single into right, putting runners at first and second with one out. After Trever Allen was hit by a pitch, Natanael Delgado doubled off the wall in left, scoring Arakawa and Mateo, tying the game at two. The Bees took the lead when Allen came home to score on a wild pitch, putting the Bees in front, 3-2. Brandon Gildea added another run in the sixth, smashing a single to left, scoring Delgado, pushing the lead to 4-2.

Quad Cities bounced back in the eighth inning, sending eight hitters to the plate, scoring four runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Sean McMullen pulled the River Bandits to within a run. Trent Woodward and Luis Reynoso singled back-to-back, scoring a pair of runs, giving the River Bandits a 5-4 lead. Quad Cities' pitching retired 10 Bees in a row to end the game.

Quad Cities' reliever, Joshua James (3-2) earned the win while Bees' reliever Jacob Kopra (0-1) was charged with the loss and Angel Heredia (5) picked up the save. The Bees head to Kane County to play the Cougars in a three game series, starting Tuesday at 6:30 as Michael Bolaski makes the start.
