Pankake Flattens Cubs in 5-1 Whitecaps Win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Joey Pankake helped jumpstart a struggling Whitecaps offense with a two-run double and a solo home run, as West Michigan snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 triumph over the South Bend Cubs at Fifth Third Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
South Bend scratched across the game's first run, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Gioskar Amaya. The Whitecaps answered with a three-run second, as both Christen Stewart and Kade Scivicque were hit by pitches to start the frame. Pankake then brought each of them home with a double into the gap in left-center field, putting West Michigan ahead to stay. David Gonzalez padded that margin with a two-out single to plate Pankake and give the 'Caps a 3-1 advantage. Will Kengor singled home Ross Kivett in the third, before Pankake blasted his third home run of the season in the fourth. His solo shot to left put the Whitecaps on top 5-1, giving starter Trey Teakell all the offense needed.
Teakell (3-0) earned his third straight win in as many decisions with the Whitecaps. The right-hander fired five strong innings, surrendering just a single run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Whitecaps improve to 18-12 in the season's second half, bringing their overall record to 51-48. South Bend drops to 16-15 this half, with a combined record of 45-53.

The Whitecaps are off on Monday, before embarking upon a week-long road trip that begins with a three-game series at Bowling Green. Right-hander Ross Seaton gets the start for West Michigan on Tuesday night, against Yonny Chirinos for the Hot Rods.
