Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the New Bedford Bay Sox, 4-1, on Saturday night at Paul Walsh Field.

With the loss, Vermont has now fallen in back-to-back games and sits at 1-2 on its current four-game road swing. The Mountaineers own a 22-15 overall record. With the win, New Bedford moves above .500 to 19-18 on the summer.

The Bay Sox scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. After Vermont starter Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) set down the first two batters of the inning, New Bedford went off on a two out rally. Designated hitter Connor Lind (Arden, N.C. / Northwestern) hit a single. The next three Bay Sox hitters walked to bring home one run and keep the bases loaded with two outs. Shortstop Rowdy Andrews (Kansas City, Mo. / Eckerd) smacked a two out two RBI single to put the Bay Sox up 3-0.

The Mountaineers answered with a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Leftfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off the frame with a base knock and stole second. Shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners with no one out. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Parenty from third, but that is all the scoring the Mountaineers would do in the game.

New Bedford tacked on a single run in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

Vermont threatened in the ninth, putting its first two hitters aboard with a hit by designated hitter Austin Taylor (Friendship, Tenn. / Tennessee-Martin) and a walk by rightfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth), but both runners were stranded as the next three batters were retired in order.

Powers pitched six innings and allowed the four runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out four. The righthander took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season.

Bay Sox reliever Michael Young (Mashpee, Mass. / Stonehill) got the win to improve to 2-3 on the summer. Young dealt three and two-thirds innings, giving up no runs, hits or walks. He struck out three.

Closer Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill. / Holy Cross) picked up his eighth save of the season for New Bedford. Escobar allowed no runs on one hit and one walk in the ninth. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday night, when they conclude their four-game road trip in a meeting with the Plymouth Pilgrims. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
