Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Hagerstown, MD)- The West Virginia Power knocked off the Hagerstown Suns 6-2 in Saturday night's series opener at Municipal Stadium. Francisco Diaz, Elvis Escobar and Pablo Reyes had two hits each to help pace Yeudy Garcia to his ninth win of the season.
West Virginia struck first in the top of the first. Cole Tucker reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two down, Jerrick Suiter popped a ball up on the infield, but no Suns player made the catch. Third baseman Bryan Mejia was charged with an error as Tucker scored for a 1-0 lead.
The Suns tied the game against Garcia in the bottom of the first and held a 2-1 lead after two. In the top of the third, Escobar doubled home Suiter after a walk to even the game up at two.
In the top of the sixth, Chase Simpson walked with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitcher by reliever Luis Torres. Francisco Diaz tripled to right on a 2-2 pitch, scoring Simpson and giving the Power a 3-2 lead. West Virginia added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Jordan Luplow scored from first on a Michael Suchy double.
Elvis Escobar led off the eighth inning with his fourth home run of the season to extend the lead. Chase Simpson later scored on a ground out to close the Power offense at 6-2.
Garcia (9-5) allowed two runs on six hits over five innings of work. John Sever pitched three scoreless innings of relief behind Garcia and Julio Vivas pitched a four batter ninth to keep Hagerstown at bay. Brian Rauh pitched five innings for the Suns, but did not factor in the decision. Luis Torres (0-1) allowed the final four Power runs and suffered the loss in his South Atlantic League debut.
Alex McRae will start on Sunday for the Power and be opposed by the Suns' Luis Reyes. First pitch for game two of this series is slated for 3:05 pm at Municipal Stadium.
