Real Monarchs (2-9-6, 9 points, 12th West) are fresh off a 14-day break in USL action and 10 days since its 3-2 win in a friendly with BYU soccer on July 15th in Provo. In that match Monarchs featured several academy players and trialists in the first 60 minutes. Assisted Coach David "Bingy" Lara directed the USL team that found itself down 2-0 at half. Lara elected to send on a fresh starting XI in the 60th minute which battled back for the 3-2 win. Trialist Jonathan Caparelli scored Monarchs first goal off an amazing free kick early in the second half. MF Alec Sundly - who subbed on with nine other players in the 60th minute - scored a brace for his side to clinch the win.
Monarchs continue to build momentum with a three-game undefeated streak in all competitions including a memorable 3-1 over Austin Aztex on July 11th in front of a record setting crowd. Aztex scored in the 28th minute putting Monarchs down a goal but MF Ricardo Velazco and FW Maikon Orellana both scored their first goals for Monarchs in the 38th and 40th minutes to end the half 2-1 in favor of Real. FW Emery Welshman would put the match out of reach in the 70th minute when he rounded the keeper and tapped in the third and final goal. Aztex head coach Paul Dalglish said he was "happy to come back to SLC" and he hopes that "this kind of win [turns] the season around for Real Monarchs."
Orange County Blues FC (7-8-3, 24 points, 6th West) has slowed down in recent weeks with only one win in its last five matches. OCB started the season racing to the top of the table winning five out of its first seven matches. Blues' last match ended in a 1-1 draw with cross-town rival LA Galaxy II. In that derby the Blues scored in the 8th minute from FW Christopher Cortez who is tied for leading goal scorer with seven goals. However, late in the first half Galaxy's Ariel Lassiter would find the game-tying goal to save his side a point.
