B-Mets Outlast Thunder in 17-Inning Duel, 2-1

TRENTON, NJ - Joe Benson laced an RBI single into left-center in the top of the 17th inning and the Binghamton Mets outlasted the Trenton Thunder, 2-1, at ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night in the longest B-Mets game by inning in franchise history. Seven B-Mets pitchers threw 232 pitches and stranded 11 Thunder runners in the four-hour, 36-minute contest.

Following 14 scoreless turns at the plate, the B-Mets finally broke through in the 17th against Taylor Dugas. The designated hitter had taken the mound in the 14th and posted 1-1/3 scoreless innings before Binghamton loaded the bases in the final inning on two walks a hit batter before Benson delivered the game-deciding single. Jon Velasquez posted a perfect inning to seal Binghamton's first extra-inning win of the season.

More than four hours prior to Benson's hit, Robert Gsellman opened his night with a perfect first inning, coaxing three groundouts from the top third of Trenton's lineup. The righty worked around singles in the second and third and settled in for a three-inning cruise. Gsellman needed just 29 pitches to sail through three consecutive perfect innings.

Binghamton's offensive support for Gsellman was limited to one strong swing. Peterson launched an 0-1 pitch from Caleb Smith beyond the left-field fence and above the four-tiered wall of advertising for his sixth home run with Binghamton.

After Gsellman retired 11 straight, Trenton's offense awoke in the seventh. Following a hit-and-run that put runners at the corners, Francisco Arcia brought in the Thunder's first run on a fielder's choice groundout to second.

Trenton threatened to break the tie in the final two innings of regulation. Taylor Dugas reached second with one out in the eighth, but Josh Smoker retired the final two batters of the inning. In the ninth, Paul Sewald inherited two runners from Smoker and left both aboard, knocking down Dan Fiorito's potential game-winning line drive up the middle and forcing the game to extras.

Sewald returned for the 10th with a perfect frame. Matt Koch worked around a one-out double in a blank 11th and came back with a shutout 12th. Adam Kolarek kept the game going with zeroes in the 13th and 14th. Trenton loaded the bases against Beck Wheeler with one out in the 16th, but the righty struck out two to send the game into the 17th.

Wheeler (5-1) tossed two scoreless innings to win his fourth straight decision. Dugas (1-1) lasted 1-1/3 innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (54-44) continue their only visit to Trenton in the regular season on Saturday at 7:00 PM. RHP Rainy Lara toes the rubber against RHP Brady Lail.
