Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - In a battle of the two first place teams in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), the Newport Gulls defeated the Vermont Mountaineers, 8-6, at historic Cardines Field on Friday night.

With the win, Newport improves to 23-11 to extend its winning streak to five games. Vermont falls to 22-14 and has its seven-game winning streak halted. With Laconia also losing on Friday night, the Mountaineers maintain their two and one half games lead in the Northern Division.

With the score knotted at six entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Newport pushed across two runs to come away with the victory. First baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla. / Villanova) stroked a one out double to one of the deepest parts of the park in right-center field. Shortstop Liam Sabino (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Vanderbilt) followed with a single up the middle to score Beermann and make it 7-6 Gulls. Sabino advanced to third on the play after an error. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Shea Donlin (Woodlinville, Wash. / Washington State) to make it 8-6 Newport.

The Gulls scored single runs in the second and third before erupting for four in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Vermont responded with two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie the game at six.

Catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) and first baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) led off the fifth with back-to-back singles. After centerfielder Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) singled to load the bases, rightfielder Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. Louisville) reached on a fielder's choice to score Stypulkowski, making it 6-1. The play left runners on first and third with one out. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rosenbaum, shrinking the deficit to four, at 6-2.

In the seventh, pinch hitter Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off the frame by blasting a solo homerun to right field. The shot brought Vermont to within three, at 6-3.

In the eighth, the Mountaineers scored three runs, capitalizing on a series of Newport miscues. A hit by pitch, two errors and two wild pitches allowed Vermont to score the three runs to tie the game without recording a hit. Designated hitter Austin Taylor (Friendship, Tenn. / Tennessee Martin), shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) and pinch runner Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) all came in to score during the inning.

Newport reliever Brandon Spagnuolo (Massapequa, N.Y. / Vanderbilt) earned the win, pitching two innings while allowing four runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk. He struck out one and moved to 2-1 on the summer.

Vermont reliever Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season. Banas worked four and one-third innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks. He struck out seven.

Gulls' reliever Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn. / Roger Williams) picked up his second save of the summer. He worked a scoreless ninth inning, setting down the Mountaineers in order. He struck out two.

Vermont returns to action on Saturday night, when the squad heads to Massachusetts to battle the New Bedford Bay Sox. The first pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
