Snappers Cruise Past Kernels, 13-7

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Beloit Snappers snapped the Cedar Rapids Kernels three-game winning streak with a 13-7 victory on Friday night. Every Cedar Rapids hitter reached base at least once while every Beloit hitter recorded at least one hit on the night.

Beloit brought 10 to the plate and scored five unearned runs in the top of the first. Yairo Munoz reached base on a two-out Kernels fielding error. Sandber Pimentel then singled through the right side, giving the Snappers runners on the corners. Max Kuhn gave Beloit a 1-0 advantage with an RBI single to left, plating Munoz from third. Jose Brizuela then drew a walk, loading the bases full of Snappers. Argenis Raga extended the Beloit lead to three with a two-run single to right, scoring both Pimentel and Kuhn. James Harris drew the second walk of the inning, loading the bases full of Snappers for the second time. Tim Proudfoot brought in the final two runs of the inning with a two-run single to right, scoring both Brizuela and Raga.

Cedar Rapids (16-13, 57-42) evened the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zack Larson started the inning with a one-out infield single. Larson then swiped second base, his 11th stolen base of the year. Rafael Valera followed Larson with an infield single, giving the Kernels runners on the corners. Tyler Kuresa got Cedar Rapids on the board with an RBI double to left-center, moving Valera to third and scoring Larson from second. A Joey Wagman wild pitch brought in Valera from third for the second run on the inning. Brian Navarreto reached on a Snappers fielding error. The Snappers fielding error also allowed Kuresa to score from third. Two batters later, Sean Miller singled to center, advancing Navarreto to second. Tanner English tied the game at 5-5 with a two-out, two-run triple to left-center, bringing in both Navarreto and Miller.

Beloit (14-14, 40-58) regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Munoz led off the inning with a double off the center field wall. Kuhn put the Snappers in front of the Kernels, 7-5, with a two-run home run to left-center.

The Snappers extended their lead to 8-5 with a run in the top of the sixth. Proudfoot led off the inning with a single to left. Joe Bennie then drew a walk, giving Beloit runners on first and second. Iolana Akau then singled to center, loading the bases full of Snappers. Munoz then bounced into a double play, bringing in Proudfoot from third.

Brian Navarreto's one-out solo home run off the left field foul pole cut the Snappers lead to 8-6. The homer was the first of the year for Navarreto.

Beloit extended its lead to seven with a five-run top of the seventh. Kuhn drew a leadoff walk to begin the frame. Brizuela singled to right, advancing Kuhn to second. Raga then drew a walk, loading the bases full of Snappers. James Harris put the Snappers in front by three with an RBI single to center, scoring Kuhn from third. Proudfoot extended the Snappers lead to five with a two-run, ground-rule double down the right field. Munoz gave Beloit a 13-6 lead with a two-out, two-run infield single.

Cedar Rapids added the game's final run in the bottom of the ninth. Pat Kelly led off the inning with a single to right-center. Valera then reached on a Snappers fielding error, giving the Kernels runners on first and second. Kuresa then grounded into a double play, advancing Kelly to third. Navarreto followed Kuresa with an RBI infield single, scoring Kelly from third.

Randy LeBlanc (6-3) suffered the loss. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Randy Rosario went 2/3 of an inning in his fourth start of the year. The southpaw allowed five unearned runs on four hits and two walks.

Cam Booser allowed six runs on five hits and three walks in an inning out of the bullpen. Luke Bard yielded one hit and a walk and struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief. Valera tossed a scoreless top of the ninth.

Kevin Johnson (2-5) recorded the win. The right-hander allowed one run on hit and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Kuresa, Miller, Navarreto Austin Diemer led the Kernels with two hits. Kuresa went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a run and a walk while Diemer finished the evening 2-for-4 with a double. Miller went 2-for-4 with a couple of singles and a run while Navarreto finished the night 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs.

English extended his hitting streak to seven games with a two-run triple. Edgar Corcino extended his on-base streak to eight games with a walk.

The Kernels resume a three-game series tomorrow evening v. the Beloit Snappers. First pitch in the series opener is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RHP Sam Gibbons (3-2, 4.25) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Heath Fillmyer (1-9, 6.49) counters for Beloit.
