West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - Despite a dramatic home run by Mike Gerber, the Dayton Dragons walked off on Narciso Crook's game-winning RBI-single with a 2-1, 13-inning victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps Thursday night.
As Dayton brought a 1-0 lead into the ninth, Dragons starter Tejay Antone came within one out of a complete game shutout after striking out Ross Kivett with one out who was ejected by home plate umpire Justin Houser for arguing the call. Gerber followed by launching a 2-1 pitch off the top of the right-field wall and bounced over for a game-tying home run to tie the game at one. The score stayed the same until the 13th, when Whitecaps reliever Matt Davenport walked two hitters, and uncorked two wild pitches before giving up Crook's game-winning single down the right-field line to end the contest.
Antone started and pitched 8.2 innings before giving up Gerber's homerun, allowing a run on just four hits while striking out eight batters. Ty Sterner (1-0) pitched 3.1 shutout innings in relief to record his first Dragons win. Davenport (0-1) failed to retire a batter in recording his first Whitecaps loss of 2015. Spencer Turnbull pitched a career-high seven innings allowing a run on five hits in receiving a no-decision. The Whitecaps record falls to 17-10 in the season's second half, bringing their overall record to 50-46. Dayton improves to 15-13 this half, with a combined record of 54-44. Kade Scivicque led West Michigan with three hits in the contest. Crook recorded nine hits in the three-game series.
