Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

TRENTON, NJ - John Gant allowed a season-high seven runs and the Binghamton Mets went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in a 7-3 loss to the Trenton Thunder on Thursday night at ARM & HAMMER Park. Binghamton stranded a dozen on base and watched their six-game winning streak come to an end in the series opener.

Binghamton was forced to play from behind after Trenton threw two on the scoreboard in the first against Gant. Danny Oh scored from second on a throwing error by first baseman Jonathan Galvez and Ali Castillo doubled Trenton's lead with an RBI groundout.

The B-Mets pushed across three runs over their next two turns at the plate to grab the lead against Joel De La Cruz. Jared King supplied a sacrifice fly in the second to cut the deficit in half. Joe Benson tied the game with a groundout to short and Josh Rodriguez scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error by second baseman Tony Renda.

The one-run advantage had an abbreviated shelf life as Trenton struck back with a three-run third inning. With two aboard, Ali Castillo drove a bases-clearing double into the left-field alley. The Thunder shortstop came home shortly after his pivotal two-bagger on a groundout by Francisco Arcia.

Trenton stretched their lead, and chased Gant from the game, with a two-run sixth inning. Taylor Dugas flared an RBI double into shallow left-center and Oh greeted reliever Dario Alvarez with a run-producing single into right.

De La Cruz pitched into the fifth before ceding to the Thunder bullpen. Cesar Vargas stranded an inherited runner in a scoreless fifth, worked a perfect sixth and left two more aboard in the seventh. Andrew Bailey carried the lead to the finish line, stranding three B-Mets in two scoreless innings.

Gant (4-5) surrendered a season-high nine hits over 5-1/3 innings in the loss. Vargas (6-0) collected the official-scorer awarded victory with 2-2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The B-Mets (53-44) continue their four-game series against the Thunder on Friday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Robert Gsellman starts for the B-Mets against RHP LHP Caleb Smith. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
