Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - The Seattle Mariners announced a roster move that affected the Jackson Generals prior to the team's game against the Montgomery Biscuits Thursday night. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Knigge, who was recently acquired in a trade with Philadelphia, was assigned to Jackson while Tony Zych was promoted to Triple-A Tacoma.
Knigge, 26, has split 2015 between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the Phillies' organization. In 28 total relief outings, he has posted a 4.97 ERA and two saves.
The big righty posted his best numbers in 2012, going 4-1 with a 1.43 earned run average and 11 saves between High-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. In 34 appearances with the Threshers, he allowed just three earned runs in 44.2 innings and was named a Florida State League Midseason All-Star. His performance earned him a spot in the Arizona Fall League with Peoria, where his pitching coach was Lance Painter.
Philadelphia took Knigge in the 12th round of the 2010 draft out of Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. He split 2014 between Reading and Lehigh Valley as well, going 7-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 45 appearances. He didn't give up an earned run in 21 May innings, earning Phillies Minor League Pticher of the Month honors. He also tossed 22-straight scoreless innings for Reading from May 2 to July 20.
Zych goes back to Triple-A Tacoma, where he made 13 appearances after beginning the season with Jackson. Between the two affiliates, the righty has not allowed a run in his lst 10 innings of work. He has 36 strikeouts and just three walks in 34 innings this season, his first in the Seattle organization after he was traded prior to the start of 2015.
Jackson's roster now has 25 active players with nine on the disabled list. Knigge will wear No. 15. An updated roster is attached.
