Miners Use Timely Hitting to Pull Past Grizzlies

MARION, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies dropped the middle game of their three-game set to the Southern Illinois Miners on Wednesday night, falling 8-3 at Rent One Park.

Grizzlies right-hander Max Schonfeld (2-5) was touched up for five earned runs in four innings of work. The Miners' offense jumped on Schonfeld early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Michael Earley picked up an RBI on a single that scored Aaron Gates, while Steve Marino laced a run-scoring double to make it 2-0.

Gateway's offense responded swiftly in the third against Miners' starter Jon Klein (2-0). After the loading the bases, Ben Waldrip delivered a two-RBI single to left field which scored Richard Seigel and Antonio Sandifer. The hit tied things at 2-2.

Schonfeld ran into trouble again in the fourth. Adrian English poked a double to right field which plated Steve Marino, who started the inning with a walk. Gates hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly while Earley hit another RBI single to give Southern Illinois a 5-2 advantage.

After the Miners (36-20) tacked on two more runs in the sixth, the Grizzlies (20-35) put together a two out rally in the seventh. LHP Ryan Brockett and RHP Pete Perez combined to walk four straight batters to give Gateway a run. Blake Brown then drilled a liner to first base which was caught and that ended the inning.

Gateway then loaded the bases again in the eighth inning but Cody Livesay struck out swinging against RHP Evan Mott as the Grizzlies came away with nothing.

The Grizzlies left 12 runners on base during the course of the contest. Waldrip paced Gateway's offense with 3 hits and 3 runs batted in.

The Grizzlies and Miners play the rubber game of this three-game series on Thursday night in Marion, Ill. The Grizzlies send rookie right-hander Donny Murray (0-1, 9.48 ERA) to the hill against Miners LHP Rick Teasley (7-2, 2.64 ERA). The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt will call the action.
