Bluefield Ridge Runners News Release

BLUEFIELD, WV - Bluefield Blue Jays' starting pitcher Nick Wells has been named The Appalachian League's pitcher of the week for the period of July 13-July 19.

The southpaw turned in a season-high 6 scoreless innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader between the Jays and the Bristol Pirates on July 16; a game that Bluefield won 7-0. He only allowed 2 hits and notched another season-high by striking out 8 batters.

Wells was slated to start the game against Bristol on July 15. However, poor field conditions pushed his scheduled start back a day and the teams were forced to play a doubleheader.

Before the Bristol game, Wells' best performance came in a 4-7 loss to the Pulaski Yankees on Independence Day, where he threw 5 innings and struck out 7 batters.

His most recent start lowered his ERA from 6.35 to 4.70 on the season. He's also struck out 24 batters this year in 23 innings of work, which is 6 more strikeouts than he had while pitching 34.2 innings in the Gulf Coast League last year.

A third round pick out of Battlefield High School of the 2014 draft, Wells is in his second season in the Blue Jays' organization. He was the starter on opening night this year when Bluefield took on the Elizabethton Twins.

Manager Dennis Holmberg and pitching coach Antonio Caceres will look to help Wells continue his upward trend and march toward the big leagues.
