Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (July 21, 2015) - All of the Wichita Wingnuts offense on Tuesday night came in the third inning via a deliberate attack. Handed a 3-0 lead, Jon Link and three members of the bullpen made the advantage hold up throughout the remainder of the game as the Wingnuts secured their 34th win of the season by a 3-1 score.
Wichita (34-23) broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when the first four batters all managed hits to the opposite field against Stephen Bougher (2-2). Luis Hernandez began the inning by shooting a double down the left field line for the Wingnuts first hit of the game. Harrison Kain followed with a groundball through the right side that advanced Hernandez to third. Jayce Ray and David Espinosa came through with consecutive RBI singles to open up a 2-0 lead. Before the inning was over, Starlin Rodriguez lined a sacrifice fly to center that plated Ray and made it 3-0.
Bougher battled through the rough frame and ended up sticking around for 6.1 innings, allowing just the three runs on seven hits and three walks.
Link (4-0) was not as dominant as in his last outing when he struck out nine opposing hitters, but still had plenty in the arsenal to quiet the Canaries. Sioux Falls (23-34) broke through for their only damage in the starter's final inning. David Bergin roped a one-out triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Brian Humphries. Link struck out six and scattered four hits.
Daniel Bennett struck out a pair in a scoreless seventh inning in relief of the starter. Left-hander Frankie Reed continued to baffle the opposition by holding off the Canaries in the eighth before turning the ball over to the closer. Dakota Watts earned his sixth save of the year by retiring the side in order on three groundballs. Watts has not allowed a run in 10.0 innings with Wichita.
The Wingnuts will try to win the series on Wednesday afternoon at 11:05 a.m. with RHP Tim Brown (6-1) on the bump. He will be countered by Sioux Falls RHP Jeremy Strawn (2-7).
