Mazzola Goes Yard, But Fish Fall a Run Short

July 21, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

By the time Winnipeg Goldeyes starting pitcher Kyle Anderson settled in, the climb facing the Goldeyes against the American Association's best team was just too much.

The Goldeyes fought back from an early 4-0 deficit, but lost 5-4 to the St. Paul Saints Tuesday night before 8,960 fans at CHS Field.

The Goldeyes fell to 24-32 on the season and are 19 ½ games back of the 44-13 Saints in the North Division. The loss also pushed Winnipeg eight games back of the Kansas City T-Bones in the wild card race.

Anderson gave up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. He got the first out of the inning, but then gave up a single and an RBI double before issuing an intentional walk that was followed by a three-run home run by Mike Kvasnicka.

After that, Anderson pitched four scoreless innings and the Goldeyes got back into the game in the top of the sixth. Nic Jackson led off with a single and after two outs were made, Adam Heisler, Casio Grider and Casey Haerther came through with RBI hits. Heisler and Casio aided the three-run rally by both stealing second base.

The good vibes didn't last long though, as St. Paul's Ryan Lashley hit a solo home run off Anderson in the bottom of the sixth. It turned out to be the game-winning run.

Josh Mazzola hit a solo home run - his league-leading 13th of the season - in the top of the ninth to being the Goldeyes back within one, but the comeback fell a run short.

No Goldeyes player had a multi-hit or multi-RBI game, but Heisler did have two stolen bases and has the fourth-most steals in the American Association this season with 22.

Anderson suffered the loss, while St. Paul starter Dustin Crenshaw picked up the win. Saints closer Ryan Rodebaugh pitched the ninth for his 14th save of the season.

Despite the loss, the Goldeyes received excellent work out of their bullpen as Brad Mincey, Brandan Lafferty and Rett Varner combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings to keep Winnipeg in the game.

The Goldeyes can split the series with a win in the finale tomorrow, which goes at 1 p.m. in St. Paul. Coby Cowgill (2-3, 4.85) is expected to the get the start for the Goldeyes against the Saints Pedro Hernandez (5-2, 3.76). The game can be heard live on Jewel 100.5 FM.

The Goldeyes will play eight games on the road in St. Paul and Kansas City this week and will not return home until Wednesday, July 29 when the Amarillo Thunderheads play at Shaw Park.Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
