Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. (July 21, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners got a quality start from Jarett Miller, but surrendered two early runs and could not come back against the Gateway Grizzlies, dropping a 4-1 game on Tuesday night at Rent One Park in Marion.

The Grizzlies' first two batters reached against Miller (3-2) in the first, and both ended up scoring when Ben Waldrip hit a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice by Tyler Tewell plus an error on the same play plated another run for a 2-0 Gateway lead. The Grizzlies would add two-out RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth for a 4-0 lead before the Miners scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh.

Joe Rapp led off with one of his two doubles on the game that inning off of Gateway starter Trevor Richards (2-4), and scored thanks to two groundouts with the RBI going to Brian Portelli. That would be all the Miners got off of Richards, though, as he pitched seven innings to get the win. Miller allowed three earned runs on just five hits over six innings and striking out seven batters for a quality start, but it was not enough as he took the loss.

Rapp and Aaron Gates finished with two hits apiece for the Miners, who out-hit the Grizzlies seven to five in the contest thanks to shutdown work by the bullpen in the later innings, but lost in the series opener to break a four-game winning streak.

They will look to even the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. behind right-hander Jon Klein, while Max Schonfeld will start for the Grizzlies.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
