Ottawa Champions News Release

Ottawa, ON - The Garden State Grays shut down the Ottawa Champions on Tuesday night, earning just their fourth win of the season by a score of 4-1.

The Grays had 11 hits on the night while limiting the Champions to just seven hits in return.

A disappointed Champions manager Hal Lanier had some choice words for his team after the game.

"Losing two out of three to a team that's hitting .215?," Lanier questioned. "A 6.15 earned run average and we can only get one run? That's not very good."

The former major league skipper said that he is expecting more from a group of experienced players.

"I need to figure out what's going on in that clubhouse over there, where all those players are," he said while pointing in the direction of the clubhouse.

"Thursday they better be ready to play, because I have seen enough of some of these players."

The Grays started off the game by grabbing a 4-0 lead for the second time in a row. This time, a good outing from Garden State starter Paul Schwendel kept Ottawa from mounting a comeback.

In his third start of the season, Schwendel limited the Champions to six scattered hits and one run. Lanier, however, was not impressed with his team's outing against Schwendel's inflated statistics.

"No disrespect to the Grays, because they just busted their rear ends for three days," Lanier stated. "We can't wait for other people to help us, we have to help ourselves out."

The Champions sent Laetten Galbraith to the mound for his second start of the season. Galbraith lasted four innings, with four runs coming in to score during his time on the mound.

After a day off tomorrow, Ottawa will hit the road to face the Trois-Rivieres Aigles on Thursday in game one of a four-game series.

The series will have big implications on the Can-Am League standings, with Trois-Rivieres and Ottawa sitting fourth and fifth place in the standings respectively, and Ottawa currently three games back of that fourth and final playoff spot.
