Late Errors Seal Baysox Fate

Bowie Baysox News Release

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox committed two costly errors in the top of the ninth inning to help the Reading Fightin Phils to a 6-4 win Tuesday. The game was tied 4-4 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when a Brian Pointer single past Baysox second baseman Garabez Rosa resulted in a pair of Baysox errors and the game-winning runs being scored by Reading.

With tonight's loss, the Baysox have dropped 11 of their last 15 games and now sit in a tie for first place in the Western Division with the Altoona Curve. The loss also means the Baysox have lost four consecutive home series.

Reading again jumped out early in the top of the first when Cam Perkins singled to the left-center gap scoring J.P. Crawford and making it 1-0. Andrew Knapp, who had four RBIs in Monday night's game, extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a RBI single scoring Cam Perkins and making it 2-0 Reading.

On the first pitch in the top of the second inning, Art Charles hit a solo shot off Baysox starter Elih Villanueva to give Reading a 3-0 lead. The Baysox cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a solo home run by Corban Joseph. It was his first home run of the season.

Fightin Phils starter Ethan Martin, making only his second start of the season, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. The majority of the earned runs came off home runs including a two-run homer from Brandon Snyder. Snyder's team leading tenth home run of the year knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

Villanueva pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks in the no deicsion. Villanueva started off rocky allowing three runs in the first two innings but settled down. He got himself in a jam in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs, but he escaped by the way of a home to first double play. After the fourth inning, he didn't allow a hit in his final two innings of work.

Trey Mancini broke the tie in the bottom fifth with a two-out RBI double off Martin giving the Baysox their first lead of the game at 4-3. Crawford tied the game back up at 4-4 with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning off Baysox reliever Jason Garcia.

The Fightin Phils broke the tie again with those two runs in the top of the ninth inning. The tough inning caused Garcia to earn his first loss and blown save of the season. Reading reliever Colton Murray, who pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, earned his fourth win of the season.

With the Baysox loss tonight, they will look to avoid the sweep from the Fightin Phils at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday behind RHP Mikey O'Brien (1-1, 4.82 ERA). The Baysox will face the fourth best prospect in the Phillies organization Zach Eflin (5-4, 2.88). Eflin makes his 15th start for the Fightin Phils and is returning to Reading after pitching for the US in the Pan Am Games in Toronto earlier this month.
