Barons Drop Tennessee Twin Bill
July 21, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - Despite holding the Smokies (49-44, 17-7) to just six runs combined for both game one and game two of a doubleheader in Kodak, Tenn., the Barons (50-43, 10-14) fell 3-2 and 3-1 Tuesday night, respectively.
Barons starter Myles Jaye (9-4, 2.55 ERA) was on the receiving end of a tough one-run loss in the afternoon's first contest. Each team posted six hits, but a three-run first made all the difference for Tennessee.
The Smokies first-inning surge came on four consecutive hits. With the bases loaded, Wilson Contreras bounced a ground-rule double over the left-field fence to plate the first two runs. The third crossed on an RBI groundout.
Birmingham got two runs back in the fifth inning, provided by Courtney Hawkins and Christian Merrero. Hawkins doubled to left, scoring the speedy Tim Anderson from second, and Marrero drove in Hawkins with an RBI single to center.
Despite the late-inning rally, Tennessee reliever P.J. Francescon (3-1, 1.00 ERA) held on to get the win and Zac Rosscup earned the save by striking out the side in the seventh.
Game two of the twin bill was won on a walk-off home run by Smokies second baseman Bryant Flete. Barons starter Tyler Danish (7-6, 4.30) tossed all 6.1 innings before allowing the two-run shot and was charged the loss.
Tennessee struck first in the first inning with an RBI single from Albert Almora, but Birmingham answered in the third to tie the game 1-1. Nicky Delmonico lined a single to left to score Anderson.
Scoreless for the final three frames, Danish and Smokies starter Ivan Pineyro (6-5, 3.95 ERA) battled until the final batter stepped to the plate. Both pitchers held the opposing lineup to seven hits throughout.
ON DECK
The Barons will enjoy an off day Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla., before beginning a five-game series against the Suns Thursday. The team returns to Birmingham July 28 to take on the Mississippi Braves.
