Visalia Pitching Overwhelms Quakes Again

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga's offensive drought continued on Monday night, suffering a 3-0 loss to Visalia at LoanMart Field.

For the second straight game, the Quakes (10-13, 51-42) failed to push a run across against the Rawhide pitching staff. Rancho Cucamonga hasn't scored in 18 consecutive innings, with their last tally coming in the ninth inning of Saturday's 3-1 setback against Visalia.

Brandon Sinnery (2-0) went the distance for the Rawhide, allowing five hits and a hit batter while striking out five. For the right-hander, who began the season with Double-A Mobile, it was his fifth career complete game in affiliated professional baseball and his first of the season.

Rancho Cucamonga's best opportunity against Sinnery came in the fourth inning. Paul Hoenecke ripped a two-out triple down the right field line. Brandon Dixon smoked a line drive up the middle, but shortstop Domingo Leyba made a diving catch to end the inning and preserve the shutout bid.

The Quakes had another chance to get on the board in the sixth. Johan Mieses' fly ball to left field was lost in the night sky by Fidel Pena and resulted in a double. Sinnery wasn't rattled, however, retiring Jacob Scavuzzo and Hoenecke on line drives to end the threat.

Visalia (18-6, 60-34) opened the scoring in the second inning against Quakes' starter Zack Bird (4-7). Daniel Palka drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Kevin Cron's bloop double to right field. Alex Glenn hit a sacrifice fly to right, chasing Palka home. Ryan Gebhardt stroked a double to center field, plating Cron for a 2-0 advantage.

After that hiccup, Bird turned into a machine on the mound. The 21-year-old right-hander, rated by Baseball America as the 19th-best prospect in the Dodgers' system, retired 14 consecutive batters before issuing a two-out walk in the seventh. Bird tied a season-high with seven innings pitched, allowing two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out five.

The Rawhide added another run in the ninth inning against reliever Dan Tillman. Gerson Montilla blasted a solo homer off the left field scoreboard for his first of the season with Visalia, giving the best team in the California League a 3-0 cushion.

With the loss, Rancho Cucamonga has been blanked four times in their last ten home games. The Quakes have been shut out six times this season, which equals last year's total.

Rancho Cucamonga will attempt to avoid the series sweep against Visalia on Tuesday night. The Quakes will send left-hander Julio Urias (0-0, -.-ERA), Baseball America's third-best prospect in the Dodgers' system, to the mound. Urias compiled a 1-2 record and 3.00 ERA with Double-A Tulsa before undergoing facial surgery. In 25 appearances with Rancho Cucamonga in 2014, the now-18-year-old went 2-2 with a 2.36 ERA. He'll be opposed by Visalia right-hander Blake Perry (7-3, 4.39 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to LoanMart Field, you can follow all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame show at 6:50.

The series finale against the Rawhide is a Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday! Fans bringing ten CRV-eligible bottles and/or cans will receive free club seat admission, thanks to the City of Rancho Cucamonga and the Healthy RC Program. It's also Special Olympics Night, as we honor these fine athletes and their achievements! Tickets for all remaining Quakes' home games are available at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000.
