Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers saw their bid at a three-game series sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers cut short on Sunday, as they fell to the Boomers in the series finale, 2-1 at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (21-30) was only their second in six games against the Boomers (23-31) this season, while the victory for the Boomers snapped a five game losing streak, and was their first since July 9.
Pitching was fantastic on both sides, as the two teams combined to score just three runs on 12 hits. Eddie Cody (6-1), an All Star for the Boomers, shut the Crushers down over seven innings, allowing just a run on five hits.
The Boomers took an early lead just two batters into the contest. After Todd Kibby retired Jordan Dean to start the game, he surrendered a solo homer to Alexi Colon, his fifth of the season to give the Boomers the early advantage.
Lake Erie scored their only run in the fifth inning, on a clutch, two-out hit from Austin Prott , who was the only Crusher to hit safely multiple times on the day. Boo Vazquez reached on a one out double to right, and he came home on Prott's two-out RBI single to center to tie the game. However, Vazquez was the only Crusher to advance past second base all afternoon.
The contest was tied, 1-1, until the Boomers scored the eventual game winning run in the top of the seventh. TJ Bennett began the inning with a double to center field, before advancing to third on Michael Valadez's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Bennett scored on Dean's sacrifice fly.
Schaumburg's run in the seventh was the only run they scored off Lake Erie's bullpen in the series over 11 innings of relief.
Kibby started the game for Lake Erie, and allowed just a run on three hits over four innings but did not get the decision. Trevor Longfellow (4-3) took the loss, allowing just a run on two hits over three innings of relief. Cody took the win for the Boomers, while Alan Oaks scored the save with a perfect ninth inning.
Prott paced the Lake Erie offense, going 2-for-3 on the day and reached three times to extend his on base streak to 19 games. Vazquez's double in the fifth inning was Lake Erie's only extra base hit on the afternoon.
The Crushers are off on Monday but will begin a three game series with the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park on Tuesday night. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (2-4, 2.69) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
