Memphis Redbirds News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Cubs completed a four-game sweep of the Redbirds Sunday afternoon at Principal Park, downing Memphis 4-2.

With the loss, the Redbirds suffered their second four-game series sweep of the season. Memphis was previously swept by the Oklahoma City Dodgers from June 30-July 3 at AutoZone Park.

The Cubs were able to get on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Rubi Silva connected on his eighth home run of the season, putting Memphis starter Tyler Lyons down early.

The Redbirds evened things back up at 1-1 in the fifth inning when Rafael Ortega doubled home Dean Anna. Reaching base on a hard-hit single off the right field wall, Anna has now extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.

After Ortega's double, Stephen Piscotty was able to give the Redbirds a 2-1 lead after blasting a triple to right field.

Memphis' advantage would not last long, as the Cubs were able to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, highlighted by the eventual game winner, a two-run home run from Christian Villanueva.

Redbirds' starter Tyler Lyons took the loss on Sunday, surrendering four runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings of work. Iowa's 11 hits off the southpaw were the most Lyons had allowed this season.

Up next for the Redbirds is a trip to the Big Easy to open up a four-game series with the division rival New Orleans Zephyrs. Back from his recent promotion to St. Louis, left-hander Nick Greenwood (7-3, 5.42) gets the start for Memphis and will be opposed by fellow southpaw Justin Nicolino (5-5, 3.40). First pitch from Zephyr Field on Monday is set for 6:00pm CT.
