Canaries Swept by St. Paul on Saturday Evening at the Birdcage

Sioux Falls, SD- St. Paul (42-12) brought out the brooms on Saturday as they took game four from Sioux Falls (22-32) 16-4. The Saints cruised to an early 4-1 lead after three innings and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Birds' by a final of 15-4 in front of 4,415 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

St. Paul struck early and often beginning in the first inning when Alonzo Harris hit a leadoff triple. Willie Argo stepped up to the plate next as he hit a sacrifice fly into deep left field that allowed Harris to tag from third. Vinnie DiFazio stepped up to the plate next and roped a homerun over the left field wall to put St. Paul ahead early on the scoreboard.

Sioux Falls answered in the bottom of the first after Jerome Pena laced a ball into deep right field, but was thrown out while trying to leg out a triple. However, the hit was deep enough that allowed Chris Grayson to score who reached earlier on a single. St. Paul put up two more runs in the top of the second and third innings.

Sioux Falls was able to put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Grayson stepped up the plate and hit an RBI double, allowing Michael Broad to score who reached on leadoff double. A few batters later, David Bergin hit a towering homerun over deep center field to plate two more runs for the Canaries. Grayson and Pena led the Canaries offense with two hits apiece.

St. Paul did the rest of the work in the contest when they answered with a run in the top of the sixth, and five runs in the top of the seventh and ninth innings. St. Paul had three players with at least three hits in the ballgame. The Saints starting shortstop Anthony Phillips paced the offense for St. Paul, going 3-for-6 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Sioux Falls starter Tyler Pearson (2-2, 4.58 ERA) was knocked out of the game early after issuing seven walks and eight hits through 5 1/3 innings of work.

St. Paul starting pitcher Robert Coe (5-2, 3.62 ERA) picked up his fifth win for the Saints after tossing six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and striking out eight Canaries batters.

Sioux Falls will hit the road for eight days beginning on Sunday as they visit the Wichita Wingnuts and Amarillo Thunderheads. The Birds' will travel first to Wichita for a four game series, then travel south to face the Thunderheads for another four game series.

The Canaries will turn to RHP Shawn Blackwell (1-7, 4.33 ERA) on Sunday night as they try to snap their current five-game losing streak. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kansas. Fans can catch all the action home and away on AM 1230 and FM 98.1 Sioux Falls Sports Network KWSN.
