West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps took an early lead, but couldn't add enough runs to it as the South Bend Cubs rallied for a 5-3 win Saturday night at Four Winds Field.
For the fourth straight game, the 'Caps opened the scoring on a first-inning RBI-double by Christin Stewart and Kade Scivicque's run-scoring single to give West Michigan a 2-0 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, Jeffrey Baez launched a solo home run to cut West Michigan's lead in half at 2-1. South Bend scored single runs in the third and fourth on a run-scoring triple by Gleyber Torres and an RBI-single from Gioskar Amaya to take a 3-2 edge.
While the Cubs were able to rally against Whitecaps starter A.J. Ladwig, West Michigan was unable to do much damage after the first inning against Cubs pitchers. The 'Caps scored only one run in the games' final eight innings as Will Kengor briefly tied the game 3-3 with a sixth-inning RBI-single, but South Bend answered with two of their own in the seventh when Amaya brought home the go-ahead run with a double, and Rashad Crawford added another with a single later in the inning.
Tommy Thorpe (3-5) gave up two runs on five innings to record his third win of the season, and second of the season against West Michigan. A.J. Ladwig (8-7) pitched 6.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits in suffering his seventh loss of 2015. The Whitecaps record falls to 14-8 in the season's second half, bringing their overall record to 47-44. South Bend improves to 13-10 this half, with a combined record of 42-48. Scivicque and Kengor reached base three times to lead the West Michigan offense. This season, South Bend has won five of the seven games between these two teams.
