Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio- The Crushers offense came to life as they scored four runs in the fourth inning and added three more runs in the fifth to take down the Schaumburg Boomers, 8-3, in the second game of the series.

For the Crushers (21-29), the win marks Lake Erie's second straight win following the All-Star Break and their fourth victory in their past five home games. The loss for the Boomers (22-31) is their fifth in a row and is Schaumburg's seventh loss in their past ten games.

The Crushers put the first run on the board in the first inning as Austin Prott led off with a double to right. He moved to third on a groundout off the bat of Emmanuel Quiles. With two outs, Anderson Hidalgo came up with an RBI single into center field to give Lake Erie the lead. Hidalgo has knocked in four RBIs in his past five games.

The Crushers lead would not last for long as the Boomers would tie the game in the second inning as Willi Martin doubled to lead off the inning. He would move to third on a groundout to second and Martin would score as former Crusher Ty Nelson hit a single back up the middle.

The Crushers would re-take the lead in the fourth in a big way. Boomers starter Edwin Carl (1-5) struggled with his command and walked Boo Vazquez, Prott and Quiles to load the bases. Kevin Zak then earned a free pass and Vazquez scored on the walk. With two outs, Hidalgo singled to plate Prott and Quiles. Juan Sanchez doubled to score Zak but Hidalgo was called out at the plate to end the inning.

Schaumburg would add two more in the top of the fifth. Michael Valadez singled to right with one out. The next hitter, Kyle Ruchim, belted his first home run of the season over the fence in left field.

Lake Erie responded with three more runs in the fifth inning. Jose Barraza led off with a single to left. After Chandler Brock blooped a single into left, Vazquez hit a fly ball to center that allowed both runners to move up a base. With runners on second and third, Trevor Stevens hit a ground rule double that scored Barraza and Brock. Stevens would move to third on a fielders choice hit by Prott. The Boomers shortstop, Craig Massey, picked up the groundball and threw to third but the tag came late and Stevens was safe. The Crushers would go up by five runs via an RBI single by Zak.

Austin Prott had two hits and walked once to extend his on base streak to 18 straight games.

Crushers starter Brad Zambron (2-3) went 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits. He also struck out six. For the second straight night, the Crushers bullpen did not allow a run. Brad Duffy, Mike Devine and Matt Brankle combined for 2 2/3 innings walking one and striking out one. Carl went 3 2/3 for Schaumburg, allowing five runs on four hits, and walking seven. Evan Boyd went 3 1/3 out of the bullpen giving up three runs.

The Crushers and Boomers will wrap up the series on Sunday at All Pro Freight Stadium. Lake Erie will start lefty Todd Kibby (0-1, 4.00) and Schaumburg will counter with right hander Eddie Cody (5-1, 2.63). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
