Independence Claims Road Draw with Rhinos

Charlotte Independence News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (July 18, 2015) - A muggy evening in Rochester ended in a scoreless draw between current league leaders Rochester Rhinos (11-0-7) and the visiting Charlotte Independence (4-6-5). Rochester had the edge in shots with eight to Charlotte's seven, but neither side's attack culminated in a goal.

Coming into the match, the Rhinos were riding a six-game home win streak, so a point will do nicely for the Independence, who have yet to win on the road. Charlotte started the game without team captain and leading point-scorer Jorge Herrera, and the offense somewhat struggled without him. But goalkeeper Matt Lampson earned a clean sheet in another consistent performance.

Rochester thought they had the game won when they finally punched through the Charlotte defense in the 80th minute. Rhinos midfielder Timi Mulgrew burst down the right side and blazed a cross towards forward Tyler Rudy. Rudy managed to turn the ball into the back of the net, but handled the ball in the process and the play was blown dead.

The Independence return to action in just six days time when they take on FC Montreal (3-11-2) on Friday, July 24, at 7:30pm. Charlotte now has 17 points on the season but remains in ninth place in the Eastern standings and will need to pick up steam in its playoff push.
