Balk the Narrow Difference as HarbourCats Nipped
July 18, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
VICTORIA, B.C. -- Another night of incredible baseball action, and another tough result, with the thinnest of margins.
A questionable balk call scored what proved to be the decisive run as the Victoria HarbourCats fell 6-5 to the defending WCL champion Bellingham Bells on Friday night at Sports Traders Diamond at RAP.
Most of the 2,371 on hand at the park stayed right to the end, with Chris Fougner's groundout to end it. People were entertained by Gramma Dynamite's stirring rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, and one lucky fan had his car thoroughly cleaned by SuperBath Mobile Car Wash. Above all that was one of the most spectacular salmon-sky sunsets anyone will ever witness, providing a perfect backdrop.
Derek Breshears was 3-5 for Bellingham, and Chris Beall had two RBIs as Bellingham outhit the HarbourCats 10-6.
Fougner was 2-5 for Victoria, but the best player on the diamond was outfielder Ben Polshuk, with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and some dazzling plays in left field, including robbing the Bells of a home run.
Cody Anderson was the winning pitcher, and Austin Dondanville took the loss in relief of Dominic Topoozian.
The HarbourCats fall to 17-18 on the season, and the two teams meet again on Saturday at Sports Traders Diamond.
Saturday's game, a 1pm start, features a giveaway of refillable water bottles from Wilson's Transportation and YYJ Shuttle, and team posters from Metropol.
On Sunday, the HarbourCats are in Nanaimo to play a neutral site exhibition game against a beefed up Nanaimo Pirates team at Serauxmen Stadium.
