Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. -- The Gateway Grizzlies allowed five unanswered runs in a 7-5 loss to the Frontier Greys on Friday night in the first game of the second-half at GCS Ballpark.

The Grizzlies (17-34) jumped out to a 5-2 lead after four innings, but were held scoreless after that point. The Greys (24-25) got to Gateway starter Max Schonfeld (2-4) for three runs in the sixth inning and never looked back.

Gateway led 5-3 entering the sixth inning before things went sour. Schonfeld allowed back-to-back singles with one out to Jhiromar Veras and Zach Tanner to put runners at the corners. Ben Lodge then delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to get the Greys within one run. Schonfeld allowed a two-run home run to Francisco Rosario moments later to put the Greys on top 6-5.

Up to that point, it was a back-and-forth game between the two teams. The Greys jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Schonfeld allowed three consecutive hits with one out. The final hit was a two-RBI single by Scott Carcaise.

Schonfeld limited the Greys to a lone run in the next four innings, while also getting some help from the Grizzlies' offense. Gateway scored one run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Ben Waldrip and another in the third when Waldrip scored on a wild pitch after he tripled earlier in the inning to tie the game, 2-2.

The Grizzlies then took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. Richard Seigel started the inning with a double and then came around to score after Kyle Bogese issued three consecutive walks. Tyler Tewell helped extend it to 5-2 with a two-RBI single with two outs.

But after that point, the offense managed only three hits in the final five innings and eventually fell short. The Greys tallied their final run in the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by Brandon Tierney.

Nick McBride (2-1) picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Nick Anderson picked up his 10th save.

Seigel, Grant Buckner and Madison Beaird led Gateway offensively with two hits each. The two teams will continue their series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Donny Murray (0-1, 7.00) will take the mound for Gateway and RHP Jordan Kraus (5-3, 1.77) will take the mound for the Greys. Sam Levitt and Kevin Schaefer will call the action on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital channels and 1400 AM KJFF.
