Marion, Ill. (July 17, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners got another great start from left-hander Rick Teasley and led throughout the contest in beating the Windy City ThunderBolts 5-0 at Rent One Park in Marion on Friday night in front of a great crowd over over 4,000 fans.
It was the Miners eighth straight win over Windy City dating back to last season, and the third straight shutout win over the ThunderBolts to run their consecutive scoreless innings streak out to a remarkable 35 1/3 innings against the visitors. It started with an unearned run off of former John A. Logan College standout Danny Jimenez (2-5) in his first professional appearance at Rent One Park. After Aaron Gates and Michael Earley reached on back-to-back singles and an error moved Gates to third, Niko Vasquez hit a sacrifice fly to right for his league-leading 43rd RBI of the season and a 1-0 Miners lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth, when Steve Marino cranked his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, down the left field line to make it 3-0. Teasley (7-2) took it from there, striking out seven and walking only two to pull into a tie for the team lead in wins and run his personal scoreless inning streak to 16 in a row.
The Miners would add insurance runs in the seventh (on a line-drive solo homer from Earley) and eighth (on a Vasquez RBI single with two outs) to cap the scoring, with four Miners owning multi-hit games in the contest and Vasquez and Marino each contributing two RBIs to the cause.
Southern Illinois will go for the series win on Saturday afternoon, with a 4:05 p.m. special start time for first pitch at Rent One Park. It will be a matchup of 2015 all-star right-handers on the hill, with Adam Lopez starting for the Miners against Windy City's Travis Tingle.
