Future Steelheads: Ryan Wells

July 17, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga Steelheads News Release

With their final pick of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection, the Mississauga Steelheads picked up defenceman, Ryan Wells of the Mississauga Reps. Though the Steelheads selected him with the 285th overall pick, Wells came highly praised from scouts, and was even listed in the top-50 in Mckeen's Hockey 2015 OHL Draft Rankings.

A native of Mississauga, Wells is 5'9, 161 lbs and is a strong, elusive skater with a snap to him that negates a size difference when matching up against other skaters.

With his quick feet, he is able to escape pressure. He holds the puck with his head up and surveys his options and shoots for opportunities. Wells can really move the puck and is equally as good a passer as he is a shooter on the power play. He takes care of his end first, but takes opportunities to join the rush and can contribute offensively.

In 33 games with the Reps last season, Wells scored two goals and tallied 10 assists. Ryan had an especially good OHL Cup tournament. In the team's four games, Wells scored two goals and added an assist, to lead all Reps defencemen and finish fourth overall in team scoring.

Wells is excited to be a part of the Steelheads family, adding "it's an amazing organization. I've been watching OHL hockey since I was around 4 or 5 years old and have met guys along the way who have been drafted, so it's a great feeling to be a part of the league. I'm really happy to have been selected by my hometown team and I'm excited to get things started."
