Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers fell to the Sacramento River Cats 11-3 at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.
Sacramento used a three-run inning in the third to pull ahead 3-0 before the Rainiers made their first appearances on the scoreboard in the fourth. Third baseman Carlos Rivero provided the first run after hitting a one-out RBI single, and outfielder Leon Landry accounted for the second when he plated Ruggiano with another run-scoring single.
Brandon Hicks' RBI triple and Ryan Lollis' RBI single helped the River Cats lead balloon to 5-2 in the seventh. The Rainiers countered with Zach Shanks' run-scoring single in the bottom of that inning, but the River Cats answered with an insurmountable six more runs over the eighth and ninth to secure a victory in the series opener.
As a team, the Rainiers lineup combined to collect a total of seven hits against Sacramento. Landry and fellow outfielder Stefen Romero led the charge after each turned in two-hit efforts.
Starter Jordan Pries was dealt the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits through 6.2 innings of work. The right-hander struck out five and walked one in his 11th start this season.
The Rainiers (44-48) host the second game of the team's four-game series with Sacramento (40-52) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 16. Tacoma is expected to trot out right-hander Roenis Elias (2-0, 3.14) to start the contest. The River Cats are slated to counter right-hander Chris Stratton (0-2, 2.23).
