Fierce Comeback Falls Short

July 16, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs made a valiant comeback against the Asheboro Copperheads but in the end it wasn't enough as they fell 9-7 at J.P. Riddle Stadium Thursday night.

Things got off to a quick start for the 'Dogs, as CJ Needam (Jr./Mount Olive) blasted a two-run homer off Peter Jewell to centerfield to put the SwampDogs ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Copperheads struck back in the top of the third, scoring five runs against Josh Covey (Fr./Florence Darlington Tech), knocking him out of the box and taking the lead. The Copperheads would open up a 9-2 lead by plating two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings against Nolan Mullen (Soph./Furman).

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the SwampDogs answered with five runs of their own, aided by two errors from Asheboro shortstop Ryan Mincher and a big two-out, two-run double from Jimmy Faul (Jr./Louisville) to get to 9-7. But in the ninth inning, Michael Wells was able to work through trouble to seal the win.

Covey got the loss, his first of the summer, and Connor Miller, who went five innings in relief for the Copperheads notched his second win of the year. Wells' save was his sixth.

The SwampDogs hit the road Friday to take on the Lexington County Blowfish at 7:05 pm at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
