Dragons Split Double Dip

Glens Falls, N.Y.-The Glens Falls Dragons (19-18) and Albany Dutchmen (16-19) met in a pair of games at East Field Wednesday night in the latest edition of the Subway Summer Series. The doubleheader was crucial to both squads as they are in a tight battle for a spot in the PGCBL playoffs, which are now just two and a half weeks away.
In game one, Albany took a 1-0 lead against Glens Falls starter Jake Murray (Rhode Island College) in the top of the first as Sean Aspinall (Azusa Pacific) singled to left to drive in Adam Gauthier (Dartmouth).
Albany starter Nick Cioffi (Towson) meanwhile had not allowed even a Glens Falls base runner for three and two thirds innings, but Ryan Hooper (UVC-Davis) put an end to the perfect game bid by ripping a double off of the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth. Cioffi would retire Dutchmen nemesis Jake Vieth (Tacoma) on a ground out to end the threat.
The Dragons were presented with another opportunity to tie the game in the fifth, and they took advantage. With two outs Zach McIlroy (Anderson) launched a ball over the head of the right fielder that rolled all the way to the wall for a triple. Colby Stratten (Indiana) then hit a dying liner toward second base that was mishandled. McIlroy scored on the error to tie the game at 1-1. Miguel Presno (Flagler) then doubled to put runners on second and third. Glens Falls took the 3-1 lead as Danny Oliveri (Triton) singled to drive McIlroy and Presno home.
Albany would answer back against Glens Falls reliever, All-Star Cameron Churchill (Nova Southeastern). Michael Bollmer (Louisville) and Hunter Boose (Georgia Regents) smacked back to back doubles to cut the margin to 3-2. The Dutchmen then tied the game at 3-3 when Patrick Hisle (Maryland) sliced a single that found a home just inside the right field foul line to plate Boose. Jack Weiller (Virginia), a future member of the current NCAA National Champions singled to give Albany back the lead and chase Churchill from the mound, replaced by Rob Hardy (Binghamton).
That is all Cioffi and the Dutchmen needed as they held Glens Falls scoreless over the final two innings to take the victory. Cioffi (3-1) scattered six hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Churchill (3-3) suffered the loss.
In the second game Ryan Hooper (UC-Davis) nailed his team-leading fourth homerun, a two run shot to center, to give Glens Falls a 2-0 lead, and the Dragons scored twice more to take a four run lead after an inning. That is all Glens Falls would need as they went on to the 4-1 victory to earn a split.
Albany cut the deficit to three runs in the third on an RBI single by Michael Fitzsimmons (Mississippi). The Dutchmen loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Glens Falls third baseman Donovan Christman (Lynn University) snagged a line shot off of the bat of Jack Weiller (Virginia) and doubled off a Dutchmen runner at second to end the frame.
Both pitchers had solid performances. Nick Duthu (LSU-Eunice) made his first start of the season for Glens Falls and was extremely efficient. Duthu (2-1) went six innings, giving up five hits, striking out three, walking four and yielding just one run. Dru Brooks (Triton) earned the save, his first of the season. Albany starter Brandon Nylin (Herkimer CC) only gave up two hits after the first inning, both to Hooper. Nylin (0-3) took the loss, but had a superb showing, giving up just five hits, while striking out eight and walking three.
Hooper was 3 for 3 for the Dragons, ending up just a triple short of the cycle, with two RBIs. Fitzsimmons was 3 for 3 for Albany, while Adam Gauthier (Dartmouth) was 2 for 4.
Glens Falls hits the road on Thursday and Friday for games at Victor and Elmira, and return to East Field on Saturday for a rare 1:00 p.m. start against the Saugerties Stallions.
