Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers edged the Southern Division leading Newport Gulls, 3-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) inter-division action at Recreation Field on Sunday night.

With the win, Vermont improves to 15-12 on the summer and sits two games behind idle first place Laconia in the Northern Division standings. Newport falls to 17-10 overall.

With the score tied at two heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Mountaineers scratched the go ahead and eventual game-winning run across home to come away with the 3-2 victory.

Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) led off the eighth with a walk. Shortstop Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) followed with a sacrifice bunt down the first base side, forcing Newport reliever Keith Weisenberg (Seminole, Fla. / Stanford) to hop off the mound and field the ball. Weisenberg hurled the ball to first, but his throw sailed by first baseman Max Beerman (Tampa, Fla. / Villanova) and toward the Mountaineers bullpen down the right field side. Ruppert scored all the way from first on the play.

Closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) recorded the final two outs for Vermont on the hill en route to picking up his sixth save of the summer. The righthander left Gulls stranded at first and third when the final out of the game was made.

Both starters pitched well and gave their respective teams six innings of work. For Newport, righthander Derik Beauprez (Adams, Mass. / Franklin Pierce) gave up two runs (both earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out one. Southpaw Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State) had yet another solid outing for the Mountaineers. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. He struck out four.

Reliever Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash. / Washington State) tossed two and one-third scoreless innings in relief and earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the summer. Lunde gave up just one hit and struck out two.

Weisenberg took the loss for the Gulls, allowing one unearned run on no hits and two walks in two innings of relief. He fell to 1-2 on the season.

Vermont took an early 2-0 lead in the first when Ruppert and Copeland drew back-to-back one out walks. Later in the frame, with two outs, first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) cranked a double to right-center, plating both runners.

Newport scored once in the fifth and once in the seventh to knot the score at two before Vermont pulled ahead in the ninth.

The Mountaineers will host the Mystic Schooners on Monday night, marking the second contest of the four-game home stand. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
