 Washington Kastles

Martina, Leander & Serena Playing for Wimbledon Titles

July 10, 2015 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release

If Serena Williams is the most dominant singles player in the world right now, then her Kastles teammate Martina Hingis is the equivalent in doubles.

Hingis is 18-0 in sets at Wimbledon, advancing to the women's doubles final with Sania Mirza and the mixed doubles final with her Kastles partner Leander Paes.

In a semifinal between the Australian Open and French Open champions, Hingis and Paes outplayed top seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Mike Bryan 6-3, 6-4.

The Kastles dream team meets No. 5 seeds Timea Babos and Alexander Peya for the mixed doubles title immediately following the men's singles final on Sunday. Don't miss live streaming of Hingis and Paes beginning at about 12 pm on ESPN3.com.

First things first, Hingis plays Saturday on Centre Court for the Wimbledon women's doubles title. The Top 2 teams in the world will square off when Hingis and Mirza face Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Hingis and Mirza beat the Russians twice in straight sets to conquer Indian Wells and Miami earlier this season. But when Hingis and Flavia Pennetta played for the 2014 US Open title, it was Makarova and Vesnina who denied them in the final.

The Wimbledon women's doubles final is scheduled third on Saturday following the women's singles and men's doubles finals. Enjoy live streaming of Hingis and Mirza beginning at about 2 pm on ESPN3.

And don't forget that Hingis returns to the Kastles July 26-27 and reunites with Paes, who is playing all seven home matches this season. Matches are close to selling out; see the Wimbledon finalists for as little as $12 by securing seats at Ticketmaster.com.

Hingis won all four Grand Slam women's doubles titles in 1998 with two different partners.

But no singles player or doubles team -- men's, women's or mixed -- has swept the majors in a single year since Steffi Graf in 1988.

With a win in the Wimbledon final on Saturday, Serena Williams of the Kastles will take her third step towards rewriting tennis history.

The reigning US Open, Australian Open and French Open champion meets first-time Grand Slam finalist Garbiñe Muguruza for the Venus Rosewater Dish on Saturday at 9 am (ESPN, ESPN3).

Williams is coming off consecutive wins over three former World No. 1 players: Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova. By beating Sharapova 6-2, 6-4 in the semis, Serena extended her win streak against the Russian to 17 straight matches.

The Kastles superstar doesn't seem to have the same spell on Muguruza. Serena is 2-1 against the 21-year-old Spaniard, most recently defeating her in three sets at this year's Australian Open. But at the 2014 French Open, Muguruza stunned Serena 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.

Besides securing three-fourths of the calendar Grand Slam, Williams is seeking her sixth Wimbledon singles title and 21st major singles championship overall.

A very limited number of VIP tickets are available to see Serena's return to Kastles Stadium on July 21, including only one Emirates VIP Dream Seats dinner table. Please contact Scott Dawson at 202-654-7047 or via E-mail for all of the details.
