Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Less than two weeks after the Black Hawks celebrated superlative results during the 2015 NHL Draft, professional scouts are looking at Waterloo defenseman Sam Rossini as a leading candidate to be selected in 2016.

On Thursday, NHL Central Scouting released its Futures List of top prospects for next June's draft in Buffalo. Rossini was one of 15 United States Hockey League skaters noted on the list of 100 ice prodigies.

Although he was the youngest player on the Hawks' roster in 2014/15, Rossini was a regular in the Waterloo lineup, dressing for 44 games. He earned an even or positive plus/minus mark in 21 of his 25 final appearances during the campaign, finishing the year at a cumulative -4 differential, while also notching a goal and four assists during his rookie year of junior hockey. A former Waterloo tender signee, Rossini is committed to the University of Minnesota.

Before appearing for the Hawks in the fall, scouts will keep an eye on the 6-2, 190-pound blue liner during the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup Tournament in Czech Republic and Slovakia next month. Rossini was named to the United States roster for the event by USA Hockey last week.

Last month, Waterloo forward Brock Boeser became the earliest draft pick in franchise history when he was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 23rd overall slot. It was the first occasion since 1992 that a Black Hawk was claimed during the first round. The Nashville Predators followed up by snagging forward Tom Novak with the 85th overall selection (third round). Future Black Hawk David Cotton was subsequently chosen in the sixth round by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Central Scouting will provide updated grades or rankings of Rossini and other potential 2016 picks periodically throughout the coming season, with preseason or midseason reports expected in September, November, and January. Final lists of leading North American and European skaters and goalies will be unveiled in April.
