PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - A 2-run home run by Worcester Bravehearts first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) helped spark a 7th inning rally, as the Bravehearts defeated the Seacoast Mavericks 4-3 on Wednesday night, July 8 on Leary Field in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
With his team trailing 3-1 in the 7th, Tower hit his sixth homer of the season, and second baseman Derek Gibree (Saint Leo / Largo, Florida) followed up with a single to score shortstop Gavin Tristan (Lamar / Richmond, Texas) and give his team the eventual game-winning run.
Seacoast took a 3-1 lead with home runs from designated hitter Louis Mele (NYIT / Bethpage, New York) and catcher Cameron Oliveira (SNHU / Tewksbury) and a run scored by shortstop Max McCoomb (St. Joseph's of Maine / South Berwick, Maine).
Gibree and center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale) both finished 2-3 at the plate, and Strom scored the first run of the game. Worcester starting pitcher Dylan Collett (Saint Leo / Altamont, New York) improved to 2-1 with the win, as he gave up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
Bravehearts pitcher Charlie Butler (Maine / Marlborough) allowed a walk to begin the 9th inning but retired the last three batters in order to pick up his first save of the year.
Mavericks pitcher Taylor Doyle (Franklin Pierce / Dubin, New Hampshire) took the loss after giving up the lead and the go-ahead run.
The 10-18 Bravehearts remain on the road to face the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs at 6:35 p.m. Thursday night, July 9 on Doyle Field in Leominster.
