Beach Bums Lose 2-1

July 7, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WUERFEL PARK An outstanding pitching performance from Ian MacDougall, and Jay Austin's first home run of the season, weren't enough for the Traverse City Beach Bums who lost 2-1 to the Southern Illinois Miners Tuesday night.

MacDougall (6-2) allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out a season-best six over seven innings. Chuck Ghysels pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Austin led off the bottom of the first with a homer just inside the right field corner pole for his first of the season, but it turned out to be the only run the Beach Bums would get off Southern Illinois starter Jarett Miller (3-1).

The right-hander went 7.2 innings, allowing only three hits, walking two and retiring 16 hitters in a row at one point. Pete Perez pitched a clean ninth for his sixth save.

In a game that had a playoff feel between the East Division leading Beach Bums and second place Southern Illinois team, it was an error that ultimately played a role in deciding the game.

The Beach Bums led 1-0 on Austin's home run and it remained that way until the fourth. Back-to-back one out doubles by Nico Vasquez and Frank Martinez tied the score 1-1.

In the fifth, Steve Marino led off with an infield hit and went to second when the throw to first was wide. The error proved costly as he went to third on a fly out to center and scored on Eric Strano's single to left.

The hit gives Strano the game winning hit in his professional debut.

The Beach Bums' best chance to rally came in the eighth as Miller walked the first two batters of the inning. However, a pick off at second damaged the rally. Eventually, the Beach Bums would still get runners to second and third with two outs but reliever Eric Green struck out Alex Tomasovich to extinguish the rally.

The loss is the second in a row for the Beach Bums (29-15) who still lead the East Division by one-game over Southern Illinois (29-17). The same two teams play Wednesday night at 7:05pm at Wuerfel Park.

Wednesday is the "Salute to Cherries Night" featuring fun promotions including a cherry pit spitting contest. Promotion. Thursday will be another 2-4-1 ticket special.
