Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - 3B Patrick Wisdom launched the game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Springfield Cardinals to the 7-5 walk-off victory against the Corpus Christi Hooks before 4,250 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday night. The start of the game was delayed by one hour and 13 minutes due to inclement weather.

After the delay, the Hooks (5-5, 53-27) came out swinging and struck for five runs in the top of the first against LHP Kyle Hald. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, before Hald got LF Brandon Meredith on a strikeout. However, 3B Colin Moran was hit by a pitch, forcing in the game's first run and keeping them loaded. Following a foul out, 1B Conrad Gregor pulled a grand slam to right field, opening the Hooks lead to 5-0.

Facing rehabbing Houston Astros RHP Scott Feldman, the Cardinals (5-5, 35-45) started to chip away immediately in the bottom of the first. Feldman retired the first two outs in order, but 2B Bruce Caldwell and 1B Jonathan Rodriguez worked consecutive walks to keep the inning alive. DH Derek Gibson then rocketed a two-run double to left-center field for his first Double-A hit, bringing home both runners to cut the Springfield deficit to 5-2.

The Cardinals continued the comeback in the bottom of the third. With one down, RF David Washington ripped a double to right field. One out later, a walk from CF Charlie Tilson and a single from Wisdom loaded the bases for Caldwell. With Caldwell batting, a pitch bounced in and became lodged in C Alfredo Gonzalez's jersey, resulting in an error on Gonzalez that advanced all three runners one base and forced Washington home, making it just a 5-3 Cardinals deficit.

Hald posted another quick, scoreless inning in the top of the fourth, before Springfield completed the comeback in the bottom of the fourth. Leading off the inning against RHP Chris Devenski, Washington sent a towering solo shot over the center field fence, bringing the Cardinals within one run, 5-4. Two outs later, Wisdom extended the frame with a two-out walk, followed by a single from Caldwell. Rodriguez then pulled an RBI single past the diving 3B Colin Moran, bringing home Wisdom for the 5-5 tie.

Hald continued to deal with three more scoreless innings to close his start. After the five-run first, Hald dealt six subsequent scoreless frames, finishing with just the five runs allowed through seven innings while striking out seven.

Cardinals LHP Ryan Sherriff took over to start the top of the eighth and retired two outs, before giving way to RHP Ronnie Shaban (W, 2-1). Shaban not only stranded a pair of runners with the final out in the eighth, but then tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to keep the tie intact.

Devenski had done his part to keep the tie intact on the mound for the Hooks, logging five relief innings with only the two runs allowed in his first frame on the mound. He gave way to LHP Reymin Guduan (L, 0-1) for the bottom of the ninth, and that was when the Cardinals struck.

Leading off the bottom of the ninth against Guduan, Tilson worked a walk to reach base. Wisdom, the Texas League Player of the Month in June, then ended it with one big swing, crushing the game-winning, two-run homer to center field to send the Cardinals to the 7-5 walk-off win.
