Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Hagerstown jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and held off a BlueClaws rally, knocking off Lakewood 7-5 on Sunday night at FirstEnergy Park.

The win gives Hagerstown (5-6/40-39) a split of the first two games of the series with the BlueClaws (5-6/38-41) who had won two straight games before Sunday's setback.

Osvaldo Abreu paced the Hagerstown offense with two doubles and two runs scored. Bryan Mejia and Cono Keniry added two hits apiece as well.

Hagerstown scored three times in the first inning off Shane Watson, who made his season debut on Sunday night. An error on Watson, covering home on a pitch in the dirt, allowed the first run to score. Jose Marmolejos added an RBI double and he ended up scoring on an error by catcher Deivi Grullon.

After the BlueClaws scored twice in the bottom of the first on a Herlis Rodriguez groundout and Kyle Martin double, Hagerstown added four runs, all unearned, in the fourth inning. David Masters' RBI single made it 4-1, while Osvaldo Abreu added a two-run double and Bryan Mejia added an RBI triple.

The BlueClaws got back in the game with a run in the fourth and two in eighth inning, one on a SAC fly by Herlis Rodriguez and another on a single by Drew Stankiewicz, but the BlueClaws left runners at second and third.

Watson (0-1) came out after 3.2 innings and gave up seven runs, though only one was earned. He struck out a career high seven hitters without walking a batter. Joey DeNato and Manaure Maritnez combined to throw 5.1 innings of scoreless relief for the BlueClaws. Hagerstown starter Austen Williams (8-1) gave up three runs in six innings to improve to 8-1 on the year. Jake Walsh threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

The series with Hagerstown continues on Monday night at 7:05. The BlueClaws have not announced a starter (scheduled starter Josh Taylor was traded to the Diamondbacks earlier on Sunday). RHP Drew Van Orden (5-1, 2.70) will start for Hagerstown.
